Presidents Present and Past

Russell Soppitt 1986/87

As our inaugural president, Russell was able to assemble a disparate group of individuals into a caring, service orientated, fun loving , community minded team of Rotarians who passionately ‘Put a bit Back’ into society at the same time as they developed their careers.

Russell in those early days practised as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and it was not uncommon for him to excuse himself in the middle of a meeting, rush to Williamstown Hospital, deliver a baby and return before the guest speaker had finished his address.

Russell’s foundation building created the ‘Gellibabies’ culture where we as proud Rotarians do not take too seriously the formalities but passionately put our backs into ‘Service above Self’ and our commitment to make a difference in the world.
